SA SLED DOG CLUB SPRINT RACE

Sunday, April 27th. As our weather starts to slip through crisp Autumn towards colder days, I had the pleasure of attending (and photographing) the South Australia Sled Dog Club’s Sprint Race meeting at Golding Oval in Para Vista, South Australia. I have always enjoyed attending community events where a shared love of an activity brings people together; there is something incredibly special about events like this where people of all ages and experience levels gather with a shared passion that celebrates fun and teamwork.

As the SASDC club gears up for their winter sledding season, this was an exhilarating day. What struck me most was the incredible generosity and warmth of the club community.  I thoroughly enjoyed watching the care, generosity, encouragement and hands-on assistance the club members of SASDC gave to a number of new attendees who were giving the dog sport a go for the first time, as well as the speed and skill of the more experienced dog and ‘musher’ teams. themselves when it was their turn to race.

The speed, coordination and sheer enthusiasm of the dogs (and their humans) was a joy to capture behind the lens. I am looking forward to the sled dog season ‘proper’ and seeing these dogs and their handlers navigate trickier, longer-distance tracks through beautiful forest terrain. Having previously bred and trained Siberian Huskies myself for many many years, I have a particular affinity for seeing working dogs in this context.

Whilst I photographed this event in colour for the club and their attendees, here below are a selection of pictures I thought had a particular quality in black and white. I hope you enjoy.
